Frequently Asked Questions
Who does vNCSY?
vNCSY’s high school programs involve guys and
girls aged 13 to 18. They come from various cultural and Jewish
affiliations, and attend public schools, secular private schools and
Jewish schools. Some come from a background of
little Jewish education or experience while others come from traditional Jewish homes.
All participants share a love for learning and having a
great time, and an understanding for tolerance and acceptance.
vNCSY also runs youth programs for pre-teens - Jr NCSY (grades 6-7) and
for younger children as part of the Schara Tzedeck Youth program.
Who runs vNCSY?
Rabbi Nachi Paris is our new Director
of NCSY in
Vancouver. Rabbi Paris (who prefers to be called Nachi) comes to us
from Israel. He has a tremedous amount of experience working with
Jewish teens and communities in Israel and Ukraine.
Rabbi Stephen Berger is the new Regional Director of Northwest NCSY.
Rabbi Berger ran NCSY in Palo Alto and Long Island before coming to
Vancouver. While based in Vancouver, he is responsible for overseeing
NCSY chapters in Seattle, Edmonton, Calgary, Portland, and of course,
Vancouver. Rabbi Berger is also involved in local vNCSY programming and
events.
Rabbi Paris and Rabbi Berger are aided by a dedicated staff, parent and
community
volunteers, dynamic and experienced college-aged advisors
from around North America, and a youth board comprised of vNCSY
participants who help plan events and outreach to more teens. vNCSY
also has an advisory Youth Commission, which is chaired by Anita
Shafran.
vNCSY is
always looking for more volunteers and any additional input is
always appreciated.
How much does this all cost?
vNCSY events are all extremely subsidized.
Still, many of the social events and trips do have costs. Many
additional subsidies are available.
What is the relationship between vNCSY and the Schara Tzedeck Synagogue?
vNCSY and Schara Tzedeck have a mutually beneficial relationship. vNCSY
receives significant funding from Schara Tzedeck and in turn provides
Schara Tzedeck with youth programming. Rabbi Paris also serves as the
youth director at Schara Tzedeck. vNCSY is open to all teens
and kids in the Greater Vancouver area.
How do I get my child involved?
First, give Rabbi Nachi Paris a phone call (cell: 604-773-5139) and let him know you are interested.
Contact us to make sure vNCSY has your child's address and email so that we can keep your child informed of upcoming events.
